Gloucester Cathedral

Approximately 1,300 years ago in 678-9 AD (ish) an Anglo Saxon Prince named Osric (he probably appeared on Last Kingdom), in what one can only assume was a mead induced inebriated state, decided to bless Gloucester with some holy ground. Fast forward 400 years later and the Stormin’ Normans decided to lay the foundations for Gloucester’s most iconic site – Gloucester Cathedral.

Fast forward another 1,000 years and Gloucester’s most iconic drink, Gloucester Gold, was formed in a little brick shed, now known as TANK, in 2011. We like to think that these two Gloucester born icons are the perfect place to start for our Tour d’Gloucester.

The Cathedral is Gloucester’s OG flagship tourist destination that is a must for all visiting Gloucester. The Cathedral is a place that is steeped in magic and wonder. So much so that 3 Harry Potter films use the Cathedral to encapsulate the wonder of the magic world; Hogwarts. In the same vein, Gloucester Gold is the OG and flagship drink of the Brewery and a must for all trying our beer. Just as Harry, Ron and Hermione reach dizzy new magical heights by running around the Cathedral, you can reach dizzy beer heights by drinking our hop packed Gloucester Gold. The Cathedral is also the location for showbiz favourites Doctor Who, Wolf Hall, Sherlock and the White Princess (amongst others).

If walking on the same grounds as TV royalty isn’t enough for you then fear not. Actual royalty takes rest in the Cathedral. Edward II, the seventh Plantagenet king of England (1407-1327) is buried in the Cathedral. Edward II, in true Game of Thrones fashion, was deposed by his wife Isabella and their son Edward III. He conveniently and definitely not under suspicious circumstances **cough cough** died in nearby Berkley Castle before being moved and buried in the Cathedral. I don’t think Sherlock would be required to solve that death on his visit to the Cathedral. In what in retrospect now feels like a bad time to pivot, you too can drink like a king with Gloucester Gold which has been crowed by multiple awards.

The Cathedral is really worth a visit and you should head over to their website if you are interested in reading some actual history about the place (attach link). Don’t just read about it though, get yourself down there and see for yourself why it is such a popular destination for locals and visitors alike.

Just as the Cathedral stands tall against Gloucester’s skyline, Gloucester Gold stands tall, against many beers in the same category. It is a multi-award-winning golden ale with crisp, fruity and a pleasantly bitter taste with a beautiful aroma of luscious tropical fruit and we would feel really happy if you gave it a try.
